About this event

We invite you to join us in a celebration of the passage of Measure LA which was approved by Los Angeles voters on November 8, 2022, by a 62.31% margin, to generate $5.3 Billion in bonds to improve infrastructure and job training facilities across LACCD’s nine colleges.

AND... Join us in celebrating LACCD’s full Board of Trustees and incoming Board President David Vela who is a member of the LGBTQ Community!

About the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD)

LACCD (www.laccd.edu) is the nation’s largest community college district, educating about 210,000 students annually at its nine colleges that serve the residents of more than 36 cities and communities from 900 square miles of Los Angeles County. Since 1969, LACCD has been providing an important learning pathway for students seeking transfer to four-year colleges or universities while also offering two-year degrees and certificated training programs to Southern California’s diverse workforce in many specialized trades and professions.

About Measure LA

Los Angeles voters handily approve Measure LA, the $5.3 billion facilities bond which will provide immediate infrastructure repair and technology upgrades for all nine LACCD campuses. LACCD now has the green light to invest in sustainability, athletics facilities, and other critical improvements throughout the system.

Measure LA will upgrade, repair, increase and expand access to affordable education for the Los Angeles region. This will additionally prepare college students for university transfer, expand access to training programs, and provide essential job skills to prepare students for 21st-century jobs.

The bonds will directly go towards repairs and upgrades to LACCD community colleges. The improvements to classrooms, water pipes, sewer/gas lines, technology, and science labs will prepare college students for jobs in manufacturing, biotech, nursing, engineering, and many other high-demand careers.

About the LACCD Board of Trustees

Newly elected and re-elected members of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees took the Oath of Office on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. The meeting also served as the Board’s annual election of new officers for the coming year.

Trustee David Vela, was elected by the Board to be the new Board President. “As the first LGBTQ person of color to serve as the LACCD Board President, I will dedicate my efforts to serving all our students. We are stronger together and I will carry this message to local community stakeholders and elected officials about the critical importance of advocating for our LACCD family.”

The Oath of Office was conducted for newly elected Trustee Sara Hernandez, Board Seat Four; and re-elected Trustees Steve Veres, Seat One, Dr. Gabriel Buelna, Seat Six; and Kelsey Iino, who was previously appointed for Seat Seven. Hernandez, Veres and Buelna trustees were each elected to four-year terms until 2026 with Iino elected for the remaining two-year term until 2024.
